Protecting Smallwood’s Natural Treasures

Our lake, forest and wildlife are part of what makes Smallwood so special. It’s up to all of us to help protect them. If you see environmental damage, injured wildlife, or other concerns, quick action can make all the difference. Below are resources and contacts to guide you in reporting issues and finding help when nature needs a hand.


Environmental Reporting Numbers:

If you see something happening in the environment, whether it be illegal dumping or other violations to environmental law, contact NYS DEC by calling the hotline at 1-844-DEC-ECOS (1-844-332-3267). This is a 24-hour hotline.


Wildlife:

Notify Smallwood’s Regional DEC Wildlife Office/Region 3 (845) 256-3098 (only open weekday business hours) If assistance from the Regional Wildlife Office is not available, contact the Wildlife Health Unit directly at (518) 478-2203 (open weekdays between 8:30 AM and 5:00 PM) or wildlifehealth@dec.ny.gov.

For removal of dead animals suspected of being hit by a vehicle, please contact the highway department. (845) 583-4460, E-Mail: bethelhighwayny@gmail.com, 7:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

*Important to report to DEC:

  • Deer exhibiting neurologic signs and/or are thin or are found dead and appear to be thin.
  • Any live or dead deer with ear tags.
  • All bald or golden eagles and peregrine falcons. Other raptors found dead of unknown cause.
